MIAMI, Florida (Yonhap) ― Although he will likely end up being a backup at the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Brazil, South Korean defensive back Hwang Seok-ho said Sunday he still cherishes the opportunity to represent his country at the sport’s grandest event.
“I can’t wait for the World Cup,” Hwang said at St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida, where the rest of the 23-man squad is training ahead of the June 12-July 13 tournament.
“I don’t know if I am going to get another chance to be on a World Cup team, so I am preparing for it the best I can.”

The 24-year-old back from Sanfrecce Hiroshima in Japan is one of eight defenders named to Hong Myung-bo’s squad, which will face Russia, Algeria and Belgium in Group H.
Hwang and fullback Yun Suk-young have the least experience in the group with only three international appearances apiece.
Where Yun is battling for minutes at left fullback, Hwang could spell more experienced teammates either as a centerback or a fullback on either side.
Hwang was called up to the team before South Korea’s friendly against Greece in March, as Hong attempted to deploy him as a right fullback ― a position up for grabs among a few players ― but a left thigh injury kept him off the squad.
The coach stuck to his guns and named Hwang to the World Cup team last month, hoping his versatility can pay dividends.
When Hong coached South Korea to the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, Hwang shined at his natural position as a centerback.
With Hong having often stressed the importance of defensive organization, Hwang’s versatility could come in handy in Brazil.
“I had a pretty good Olympics, and I had a chance to play there because I was well-prepared,” Hwang said.
“I am ready to play at any position. Whether it’s playing defense or jumping in on offense, I can do the job.”
