[Graphic News] Seoul sees 189 couples marry, 55 divorce every day

An average of 189 couples got married every day in South Korea’s capital Seoul last year while 55 couples got divorced, data showed Wednesday.

According to 2013 data for Seoul spanning 20 sectors including population and the economy, the marriage rate inched down from the previous year, with the divorce rate staying flat.

The capital saw a daily average of 230 childbirths last year while an average of 115 Seoulites died each day.

The total population reached 10.4 million as of last year, a 4.3-fold increase from 1960, with the average age of Seoulites standing at 39.7.

The number of Seoul residents aged 65 or older amounted to 1.2 million, with one-fifth of them living alone.

Foreigners living in the city numbered 244,000 as of last year, accounting for 2.4 percent of the total Seoul population. Chinese made up the biggest group of foreigners in Seoul with 132,000, followed by Taiwanese, Japanese and Americans.

The city also saw an average of 1.04 people die in car accidents every day last year while an average of 1,010 crimes was recorded every day.

Seoul’s consumer prices nearly doubled over 20 years, according to the data.
