Director seeks funding for Sewol documentary

Korean-American director Kim Dong-bin seeks to make a documentary of the recent sinking of the Sewol through crowdfunding.

Crowdfunding is a method of raising funds on the Internet with donations from the public to a variety of initiatives such as political or NGO campaigns, social business startups and art projects.

Kim has posted his purpose and plans of the documentary “Upside Down” on American and Korean crowd funding websites Kickstarter and I-Seed, respectively.

“‘Upside Down’ is a collaborative documentary about Sewol and the inner systems of Korea that enabled such preventable disaster,” said Kim on Kickstarter. “I believe Sewol is only one of the symptoms caused by the corrupt and distorted system in South Korea.”

Kim plans to visit South Korea this summer to interview victims’ families, divers, professors, researchers and volunteers to search for the causes of the tragic accident.

As of Friday morning, a total of $1,681 was raised in Kickstarter. The project will receive donations until June 30 in the U.S. and July 5 in South Korea. He expects to start filming in July.
