냄새를 보내주는 스마트폰 개발

냄새를 문자처럼 전송하는 신종 스마트폰이 개발되었다.

20일(현지시간) 텔레그레프 등 외신에 따르면 파리의 한 연구실에서 개발한 ‘오폰’은 320가지의 향을 생성할 수 있는 ‘오칩’을 통해 냄새를 문자처럼 전송할 수 있다.

이 상품을 개발한 프랑스 라보라토아의 설립자 데이비드 에드워드는 “이 프로젝트는 예술가와 디자이너, 과학자, 연기자들이 모두 협업하여 하나의 공통된 언어를 만들려는 시도에서 비롯했다,”고 전했다.

에드워드는 전달된 향이 관련된 감정을 자극하여 하나의 대화 수단으로 발전하기를 기대한다고 전했다.

스마트폰에 장착되어 있는 ‘오칩’이라는 작은 통이 스마트폰에 장착되어 있는데, 이를 통해 사용자는 상응하는 ‘오트랙스’ 앱을 통해 받는이의 경험에 대해서도 영향을 줄 수 있게 되었다.

오폰은 원형 모양의 기기로 ‘오트렉’이라는 애플리케이션(이하 앱)을 통해 블루투스로 연동된다. 앱으로 원하는 냄새를 선택해 전송하면 ‘냄새 정보’와 관련된 음악과 이미지를 연상시켜 전통적인 문자메세지처럼 의미를 전달하는 방식이다.

이 기술은 영국의 월간지 와이어드 UK에서 처음 소개됐으며 출시일자는 아직 확정되지 않은 것으로 알려졌다. 앞으로 더 다양한 향을 전달할 수 있도록 개발 중이라고 전했다.

Smartphone sends 320 different smells

A new gadget called the Ophone enables users to send odors to friends instead of traditional text messages, foreign media outlets reported Monday.

“The Olfactive Project is a collaboration between artists, designers, scientists and performers built on an old dream of a universal language,” David Edwards, founder of Le Laboratoire, was quoted as saying.

The founder is looking to set off inherent emotional connections through various scents, conjuring up images that can communicate basic types of messages.

Using the oChip, a small cartridge attached to a smartphone, users can send the selected smell using the corresponding app called oTracks. Users also have control over how it is received through programming that gives different hints of the smell along with music.

The technology was first developed by students at Harvard University under the guidance of French-based Le Laboratoire.

The release date has not yet been announced but the developers are constantly working on transmitting a wider range of smells, aiming for up to 1000 different kinds.
