Samsung smartphones grab 65% of global Android market

Samsung Electronics’ smartphones account for almost two-thirds of the Android-powered smartphone market, according to Localytics, a global market research firm.

The smartphones manufactured by the Korean tech giant snatched up 65 percent of the entire Android market, according to the research firm’s February report.

Among the Samsung mobile devices, the Galaxy S series took up 30 percent.

The most popular model of the Galaxy lineup was the S3, which recorded a 15 percent market share, while the S4’s portion stood at 10 percent.

The market share of Samsung smartphones in the Android smartphone market has more than doubled since the third quarter of 2010, when the Korean tech giant recorded a 32 percent market share, according to international research firm Gartner.

The Android operating system run by Internet behemoth Google dominates the global handset market with around 68 percent of smartphones worldwide running on the OS, according to a recent report compiled by research firm Strategy Analytics.

In Korea, 93 percent of smartphones are powered by Google’s mobile OS.

Samsung recently released its new flagship smartphone Galaxy S5, featuring a heart-rate monitoring system and a fingerprint sensor, with which the Korean company aims to maintain its upper hand in the global mobile market this year.

The Galaxy S5 is scheduled to be released in mid-April, and will reportedly cost more than $1,000.
