SK Telecom to launch new user-friendly platform

South Korea’s No. 1 mobile carrier SK Telecom Co. said Thursday it plans to use a new platform for smartphones starting next month that aims to improve users’ convenience and block spam calls.

The new system, named “T-phone,” will allow users to find numbers easily on its database of 1 million listings, making it faster than searching through the Internet, the company said.

Based on SK’s positioning system, T-phone will provide the closest number depending on users’ location, along with related Web pages, maps and other information, it said.

The system will also show details of unidentified incoming calls, such as callers’ corporate or personal names, as well as the purpose of the calls. The display, for example, will show “insurance advertisement.”

“SK will step up efforts to develop products and services meeting diverse needs of clients through elaborate data analysis,” said Park In-sik, who heads the firm’s network operation business.

“We will bolster our market’s dominance by finding hidden demands of users through the T-phone platform.”

SK Telecom said the service used a database of reports from individual users based on their experiences, under cooperation with local information provider Evain. (Yonhap News)
