LAS VEGAS ― Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, the world’s top two TV makers, heralded the dawn of a truly flexible TV era as they unveiled the world’s first bendable television displays at the 2014 International CES in Las Vegas on Monday.
Samsung’s bendable TV, featuring an 85-inch display that can curve simply with the use of a remote control, took the center stage of its press conference held at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, a venue for the CES.
The company expects the bendable TV will be a game changer in the global TV market and become a flagship product that represents a future home.
Samsung announced the firm’s plans to improve the lives of consumers, vowing to help make the world more connected, smarter and safer.
“Samsung has much more to contribute to creating future homes than other rivals do since it manufacture electronics parts, including displays and semiconductors, on its own, and roll out a broad range of finished electronics products,” said Yoon Boo-keun, Samsung’s consumer electronics chief, in his speech at the conference filled with 1,500 participants.
Prominent partners include Michael Bay, the director of the “Transformers” saga.
Some movie clips of the director’s upcoming movie “Transformers 4” will be first previewed on Samsung’s UHD TVs, according to Samsung.
The clips will also be played on UHD TVs displayed at Samsung’s retail shops around the world.
Also unveiled products at the event include much-talked-about tablet PCs such as the 12.2-inch Galaxy Note Pro and the Galaxy Tab Pro in 8.4-, 10.1- and 12.2-inch sizes.
Samsung’s local rival LG Electronics said it would unveil a new TV model featuring a bendable organic light-emitting diode display later on the day.
LG said it won a grand slam title as it has unveiled the first flat, curved and bendable OLED TVs.
Like Samsung’s bendable UHD TV, a user can change the curve with a remote control.
“The bendable OLED TV proves LG has reached the pinnacle of the existing TV technology. LG will keep setting a direction for the TV market by introducing innovative OLED TVs,” said Ha Hyun-hoi, LG Electronics’ home entertainment company.
