Dollar-won volatility widens in Q1

The volatility in the dollar-won exchange rates slightly increased in the first quarter from the previous three-month period as the US greenback weakened this year, central bank data showed Thursday.

The average daily variation, showing the change from the previous session's closing price, came to 5.7 won in the January-March period, up from 4.9 won in the previous quarter, according to the Bank of Korea.

The increased fluctuation in the dollar-won exchange rates came as the dollar has weakened since late last year, the BOK said.

Meanwhile, the average gap between the daily high and low of the dollar-won exchange rates came to 6.9 won in the first quarter, down from a 7.0 won fluctuation a quarter earlier, the BOK said.

In the first quarter, the local currency traded at an average of 1,152.6 won against the US dollar, compared with 1,158.6 won in the previous quarter, it said.

Meanwhile, the BOK said the daily foreign exchange turnover by local lenders came to $22.41 billion in the first quarter, up $2.56 billion from the previous quarter. (Yonhap)
