A man who held a pregnant woman hostage at a department store in southern Seoul Wednesday morning has been arrested, police said.
Authorities said the man threatened the woman with a knife that was on display in the kitchen appliance section on the 7th floor of the Hyundai Department Store in Samseong-dong. The man didn’t demand anything throughout the incident. He was taken down by the police less than an hour after the confrontation started. No one was injured, officials added.
Witnesses said the man, who was dressed in ordinary attire, wandered around the store and suddenly grabbed the knife.
"Customers started screaming and evacuated downstairs. We were in a panic,” said the clerk who was on duty.
Police said the man is also believed to have started a fire in a bookstore on the lower level of COEX mall at around 11 a.m., about an hour prior to the hostage scene.
The authorities are currently investigating the case and the motive for the crime.
The hostage was immediately transferred to a nearby hospital after she fainted from shock.

대낮 강남백화점서 임산부 인질극, 왜?
(연합뉴스) 서울 강남경찰서는 대낮에 서울 강남의 백화점에서 인질극을 벌인 등의 혐의(인질강요 등)로 A씨를 붙잡아 조사하고 있다.
경찰에 따르면 A씨는 이날 낮 12시20분께 서울 강남구 삼성동의 현대백화점 무역센터점 7층 주방용품 매장에서 한 임신부를 식칼로 위협, 머리채를 붙잡고 인질극을 벌인 혐의를 받고 있다.
한 목격자는 "오전 10시에 가게를 열 때부터 한 젊은 남자가 웃으며 어슬렁거리는 것을 봤다"며 "그가 갑자기 매장에 있는 칼을 잡으면서 진열된 물건들이 떨어져 큰 소리가 났다"고 당시 상황을 전했다.
매장 직원은 "사람들이 다 소리치며 아래층으로 도망갔고 순식간에 백화점이 공포 분위기에 휩싸였다"고 말했다.
이 남성은 앞서 1시간 전에는 지하 코엑스의 대형 서점에서 불을 지르고 달아났던 것으로 알려졌다.
긴 머리에 평상복 차림인 이 남성은 인질을 잡고도 별다른 요구 사항을 내놓지 않다가 한 시간이 채 안돼 경찰에 제압돼 체포됐다.
인질로 붙잡혔던 여성은 충격으로 쓰러져 인근 병원으로 옮겨졌다.
경찰은 A씨를 상대로 범행 동기를 조사하는 한편 백화점과 지하 매장에 설치된 CCTV 화면을 확보해 분석하고 있다.
