Seoul raises ordinance issues with KORUS FTA

Seoul City voiced concerns over South Korea’s free trade agreement with the U.S., saying it possibly clashes with several local laws, capital officials said Thursday.

According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, after analyzing 7,138 city and district regulations they found 30 that may disagree with the Korea-U.S. FTA.

The capital recommended that the central government create countermeasures for eight of the regulations that have a possibility of clashing with the FTA. The regulations affect three higher ordinances regarding the distribution industry, local construction and support for social businesses.

Seoul City also plans to continue research to find more evidence regarding eight regulations that could be seen as a breach of the FTA.

The local government would revise three regulations that disagree with the FTA, and exercise caution in the application of 11 other regulations.

Seoul City said it planned to continue to research the effect the FTA will have on the capital’s economy and civil life.
