LG Chem to supply batteries for Energiequelle’s storage system

LG Chem, South Korea’s materials and battery giant, said Sunday it had sealed a deal to supply lithium-ion batteries to Energiequelle, a Germany-based renewable energy management and services provider.

LG Chem’s batteries will be used in Energiequelle’s energy storage system to distribute electricity generated by clean energy sources from wind, solar and biomass power plants in Feldheim, Brandenburg.

The company said it would install its 10.8 MWh batteries by the end of the first quarter of next year, with the capacity to supply power via electric grids to some 2,000 households per day. Feldheim, about 80 km southwest of Berlin, has a population of some 130 people, it noted.

Its batteries will help Energiequelle to store electricity in the storage system for efficient power distribution, LG Chem added.

“The main application of LG Chem’s batteries is to stabilize and regulate power frequency to store energy in the ESS and deliver it to the electric microgrid whenever it is needed,” LG Chem said in a press release.

Kwon Young-soo, president of the company’s battery division, said it would use this opportunity to leap forward in the global ESS battery sector.

The global ESS market is expected to reach 58 trillion won ($55.6 billion) by 2020, up from 16 trillion won in 2013, according to researcher Navigant.
