"북한 억류 美대학생, 호텔서 발생한 사건이 구금 이유"

최근 북한에 억류된 미국인 대학생은 그가 묵었던 호텔에서 발생한 사건으로 구금됐다고 AP통신 등이 23일(현지시간) 보도했다.

북한 전문 여행사 '영 파이어니어 투어스'는 자사 고객인 오토 웜비어(21)가 '호텔 사건'으로 억류됐다고 밝혔다.

미국 버지니아대학교 학생 웜비어는 중국 시안(西安)에 본사를 둔 이 여행사를 통해 북한에 여행을 갔다가 이달 2일 구금됐다.

북한 조선중앙통신은 지난 22일 웜비어의 억류 사실을 전하면서 그가 미국 정부의 묵인과 조종 아래 '반공화국 적대 행위'를 했다고 밝힌 바 있다.

조선중앙통신은 웜비어가 어떤 '적대행위'를 했는지 등에 대해서는 구체적으로 설명하지 않았다.

여행사 측은 "웜비어가 평양 양각도국제호텔에서 묵었고 사건이 발생했을 당시 다른 여행객들과 함께 있지 않았다"고 전했지만, 호텔에서 무슨 일이 있었는지는 구체적으로 설명하지 않았다.

북한 여행의 가이드 샬럿 구트리지와 일행들도 웜비어의 안전을 고려해 사건의 세부내용을 말하지 않았다고 로이터통신은 보도했다.

웜비어는 지난 2일 베이징으로 출국 직전 공항에서 체포됐다.

북한 공항 관계자 2명이 웜비어를 출입국 관리소로 데려갔고 이후 그는 비행기에 오르지 못했다.

가이드인 구트리지는 로이터통신에 "웜비어는 끌려가지 않았고 소리를 지르지도 않았다"며 당시 상황을 설명했다.

여행사는 "웜비어가 억류된 이후 병원으로 옮겨졌다는 공항 관계자의 말을 가이드가 들었다"며 가이드가 그를 만나려고 했지만 실패했다고 설명했다.

여행사는 웜비어가 5일간 북한에 머무르는 동안 다른 여행객처럼 사진을 찍고 여행을 즐기는 등 정상적으로 행동했다고 강조했다.

현재 북한에 억류 중인 서양인은 웜비어를 포함해 총 3명인 것으로 알려졌다.

CNN방송은 한국계 미국인 남성 한 명이 간첩 혐의로 북한에서 체포돼 감옥에 갇혀 있다고 지난 11일 보도했다.

올해 62세의 귀화 미국인인 이 남성은 CNN과의 인터뷰에서 자신을 '김동철'이라고 소개했다.

북한은 지난해 12월에는 '특대형 국가전복음모행위'를 저질렀다고 주장하면서 한국계 캐나다인 임현수(61) 목사에게 종신노역형을 선고하기도 했다.

일각에선 북한이 미국 시민을 체포한 것은 최근 핵실험 이후 외교협상을 유리하게 끌고 가거나 미국을 자극하기 위한 전략이라는 해석이 나온다. (연합)

Tour agency: American detained over Pyongyang hotel incident

A China-based travel agency said Saturday an American university student recently detained by North Korea is being held over an unspecified incident at his hotel before he was scheduled to board a flight for Beijing.

North Korea announced his detention on Friday in a state media report accusing Otto Warmbier of committing a “hostile act” orchestrated by the U.S.

Gareth Johnson, the CEO of Young Pioneer Tours, confirmed via email Saturday that Warmbier had been staying at Pyongyang's Yanggakdo International Hotel and was not with other tourists when the incident occurred. The company statement said Warmbier was detained at the Pyongyang Airport on Jan. 2, but didn't explain what exactly happened at the hotel.

The company said in its statement that an airport official told one of Young Pioneer's guides after Warmbier was detained that he had been taken to a hospital. The guide attempted to go back to see him, but was unable to as airport staff ushered her through immigration, the company said. The company later learned “there had been an incident,” according to the statement.

Warmbier is from Wyoming, Ohio, and was studying finance at the University of Virginia.

The U.S. and South Korea have been pushing for tough sanctions against the North over its latest nuclear test on Jan. 6. North Korea has detained a few Americans, South Koreans and other foreigners in recent years, accusing them of anti-North activities in what analysts say are attempts to wrest outside concessions.
