Chinese woman wins naturalization lawsuit after failed attempt over prostitution

The Seoul Administrative Court said on Sunday it has ruled in favor of a Chinese woman who has sought Korean citizenship after her failed attempt due to her past involvement in prostitution.

The woman entered Korea with H-2 working visit visa in 2009 and was prosecuted for prostitution the same year. She received a suspension of indictment as she had engaged in prostitution once due to financial difficulties.

In February 2013, the woman married a Korean man and got an F-6 visa. In October 2015, she applied for naturalization, as her conditions met the qualifications. But the Ministry of Justice rejected her application, citing her past misconduct.

She filed a lawsuit against the Justice Ministry on its rejection decision at the administrative court, which ruled in favor of her complaint. The court said the woman, after marrying a Korean man, has been living a regular life while working, and the ministry had not properly taken into consideration her circumstances.
