<비판을 말할 때>

1

A The airline faced a barrage of criticism after they dragged a person off the plane.

B And rightly so. I saw the footage and it was really upsetting.

He faced a series of criticism from his fellow senators.

He faced a barrage of criticism from his fellow senators.

2

A Jack says he’s decided to go to medical school.

B Yeah, he wants to follow in the footsteps of his father and become a doctor, too.

He decided to have the same job as his father.

He decided to follow in his father’s footsteps.

3

A At the end of the day, I want to make a positive impact on other people’s lives.

B No wonder you work for a non-profit organization.

At last, I had to accept her suggestion.

At the end of the day, I had to accept her suggestion.

end of the day는 ‘하루의 끝’이라는 뜻이지만 at the end of the day는 ‘결국에는’, ‘최종적으로는’ 이라는 뜻을 지니는 부사구입니다.

4

A Our boss will set the tone for the meeting. We just need to follow suit.

B Okay. That’ll help us evade the blame if the meeting goes horribly.

The meeting will set the direction for how the project will progress.

The meeting will set the tone for how the project will progress.

set the tone for ~는 ‘~의 전체적인 톤을 정한다’는 뜻이죠. Just to set the tone for today’s meeting ~와 같이 표현할 수 있습니다.

5

A Why did he plead guilty without even making his case?

B It was beyond a reasonable doubt that he committed the crime.

It couldn’t be doubted that he committed the crime.

It was beyond a reasonable doubt that he committed the crime.

6

A I’m sure about this project, but people don’t seem to be very supportive.

B That's where confidence comes in. You should stand firm and have confidence in yourself first. Otherwise, it will be hard for anyone else to have confidence in you.

That’s why the role of the auditor is important.

That’s where the auditor comes in.

that’s where ~ comes in은 ‘바로 그 지점에서 ~이 등장한다’는 뜻이죠. That’s where the auditor comes in(그래서 감사의 역할이 중요합니다).
