The Korea International Volunteer organization is to help kids at Myungjin Children’s Welfare Center on Jan. 15. The group will visit the center located near Gubeundari Subway Station to talk with and teach the kids, as well as playing and enjoying food with them. The center caters for 99 children from kindergarten to college age. Animal shelter visit Saturday in Daejeon

A volunteer day will be held at Daejeon Paws animal shelter on Jan. 14. The group will meet at Daejeon KTX station at 12 p.m. for the trip expected to run until about 3:30 p.m. Those attending are advised to bring hand sanitizer, water and snacks for the animals. Donations of items such as dog food, toilet paper, raw eggs, grooming supplies are also welcome at the shelter. Anyone interested in attending should first e-mail deborahfallon@hotmail.com.
Teachers sought for N.K. refugees

More English teachers are being sought to participate in a volunteer program helping North Korean refugees. An established volunteer tutoring program is set to expand shortly and the organization is looking for more people to help teach new settlers here. Tutoring is currently done from 12:30-3 p.m. in the Daecheong area of Gangnam, southern Seoul. Those interested in participating should send an e-mail to jordan.groh@gmail.com for more information.

Two eco movie nights are set to be held at a Daegu cafe. Czech human rights leader Vaclav Havel is to be honored at an event in Seoul on Jan. 6. The event will be held in the city’s Jongno-gu area at 2 p.m.Havel was the last Czechoslovak president from 1989-1992 and the first president of the Czech Republic from 1993-2003. He passed away on Dec. 18 at the age of 75.As well as being a political leader, Havel was considered an international symbol for the protection of human rights and democracy.
