Team duplicates flying house feat from ‘Up’

In the Pixar movie “Up,” 78-year-old Carl Frederickson lifts his house in the air by attaching hundreds of balloons and taking off on a journey to realize his life-long promise to his wife -- traveling around the world.

He does this all by himself, but in reality, it took a team of scientists, engineers, two balloon pilots and dozens of volunteers to set up a small house attached to 300 helium-filled balloons.

The small house was not a real one, but a light-weight house measuring 4.8 meters by 4.8 meters, and standing 5.5 meters high.

The small house took off into the air and flew for about an hour at a 3-kilometer altitude with people on board in a private airfield in California.

The project was the part of a new National Geographic TV series “How Hard Can It Be,” expected to be aired in 2012, and recorded as the largest balloon flight ever tried.
