‘Potato party’ photos go viral
Apparently they just can’t get enough.
A photo of South Korean teenagers devouring an enormous pile of McDonald’s French fries has gone viral online.
The photo is being called “McDonald’s 270,000 won fries,” because students in the photo allegedly ordered 270,000 won worth of fries, poured them on to their tables, and binged away, according to witnesses.
The undated photo has circulated on various websites and blogs, prompting disgruntled responses from Internet users.
“Just looking at it makes me … sick.” “It looks like maggots, in a massive heap like that.” “I wonder why the hell they’d do that. It’s such a waste,” unnamed Internet users wrote.
While the photo has been uploaded numerous times, with each uploader claiming to have witnessed the event, specific details have yet to emerge.
Media outlets worldwide, including ABC news, the Daily Mail and the Guardian, have been quick to take notice of the eccentric partying.
“South Korean kids have taken to ordering huge amounts of fries in McDonald’s, dumping them on to trays and photographing themselves stuffing their faces,” reported British newspaper the Guardian.
The Korean students were reportedly mimicking “potato parties” that originated in Japan, according to online gaming website Kotaku.com.
According to the report, McDonald’s Japan started a special sale of their French fries last October, charging the same amount 150 yen (1,700 won) for all sized portions of fries. As a result, buying a large order of fries became a bargain.
At the beginning of the sale, one Twitter user uploaded a photo of 23 orders of large fries dumped into trays. The photo soon went viral and was re-tweeted thousands of times.
Other young Japanese began ordering dozens of orders of fries, with one group in Okinawa ordering 60 servings. According to Kotaku, the group finished every single one of the fries.
The potato partiers garnered angry responses from supposed employees of the fast food restaurant. One employee pleaded with the potato partiers to stop, saying that the massive order was getting complaints from other customers and that preparing such a large order without prior warning puts a burden on the entire staff.
