France No. 1 importer of S. Korean cosmetics in Europe

France was the biggest importer of South Korean cosmetics among European Union members last year as more beauty-conscious French fell in love with innovative Korean products, a report showed Saturday.

France imported 17.41 million euros (2.1 billion won) worth of Korean cosmetics in 2015, accounting for 35 percent of total sales in Europe, the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency said.

Britain was the No. 2 importer with 16 percent, trailed by Germany with 9 percent, it said. Outbound shipments of Korean cosmetics to France have sharply  jumped from 5.1 million euros in 2013 to 9 million euros in 2014.

The French particularly preferred multi-functional products, such as anti-wrinkle and brightening serums and blemish balms, or BB cream, which has make-up, moisturizer and sunblock in a lightly, tinted formula.

To further expand their presence in the European market, market watchers suggested Korean companies pay more attention to eco-friendly materials and marketing efforts with local partners.

"Korean companies will have to step up efforts to use eco-friendly packaging and containers as French consumers buy cosmetic products that are considerate of well-being and environmental effect," the KOTRA said in the report. "Companies with advanced manufacturing technology can partner up with global companies to tap into the local market." (Yonhap)
