Painter Park Noh-soo, 86, died Monday, at Yonsei Severance Hospital.

Born in 1927 in Yeongi, South Chungcheong Province, Park graduated from Seoul National University, where he studied fine art.

At age 28 he won the president’s prize at the country’s top art contest with his work “Sunsoun,” an ink-and-wash painting that showed his original coloring skills and the usage of blank space.

Park did not follow the prevailing trends of the time, developing his unique style of using both meok, or India ink, and color in his works.

In later years, his works received renewed attention, with a retrospective of his works being held at the National Museum of Art, Deoksugung, in 2010 despite an illness.

Park served many posts, including professor of fine art at Seoul National University, and chairman of the fine art division of the National Academy of Arts.

Park’s funeral will be held at the Yonsei Severance Hospital at 9 a.m., Wednesday
