KOC president Park not to seek second term

The incumbent head of the top South Korean sports body said Monday he will not run for a second term.

Park Yong-sung, chairman of the Korean Olympic Committee, said in a statement that he will not seek a second term in an election scheduled for Feb. 22.

Park, 72, had been the KOC head since 2009. He had also been a member of the International Olympic Committee.

Lee Elisa, a former table tennis star and now a lawmaker with the ruling Saenuri Party, and Park Sang-ha, chairman of the International Soft Tennis Federation, have already declared their candidacies.

Kim Jung-haeng, head of the Korea Judo Association, is expected to join the two candidates.

Kim is one of Park Yong-sung’s closest aides. (Yonhap News)
