Korea National Sport University said Tuesday that professor Ahn Yong-kyu was appointed as its sixth president on Dec. 14.
Ahn, a professor in the leisure sport department, graduated from the university with a bachelor’s degree in 1982, and earned a master’s degree in physical education from Dongguk University in 1984 and a doctorate of science from Korea National Sport University in 1994. In 2011, he acquired a Ph.D. in philosophy from Korea University.
He has served as a professor at Korea National Sport University since 1995, and worked for MBC television as a sports commentator since 2003.
Ahn coached the national taekwondo team in 1990 and was its manager in 2005 while serving as a professor of the university.
At the university, he headed the planning office, taekwondo department, Lifetime Education Center and graduate school.
He is also former chairman and current honorary chairman of the Korean Philosophy Society for Sport & Dance.
He has written 12 books, including one on taekwondo, and about 150 research papers, including two published in international journals.
His four-year term as the new president will begin on March 13 next year.
