Cardinal Walter Kasper, president emeritus of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity of the Roman Catholic Church, will receive an honorary doctorate from Suwon Catholic University on Friday, the school announced Thursday.
The priest will lecture on “The Current Situation of the Roman Catholic Church” after receiving the honorary degree at the university. This is the first time the clergyman is receiving a degree from a university in Asia.
Cardinal Kasper is known for his efforts to promote pan-religious understanding and cooperation while serving as the president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity from 2001 to 2010. During his visit to Korea in July 2006 he arranged meetings with the leaders of the Presbyterian, Anglican and Orthodox churches, and discussed sharing knowledge.
At the 16th World Methodist Council held in Seoul at the time Cardinal Kasper signed a joint declaration on the doctrine of justification, which is considered a milestone in the history of Christianity. He also visited the late President Roh Moo-hyun to discuss peace between South and North Koreas.
