Civilian group to deliver 300 tons of flour to N. Korea

A South Korean civilian relief group with ties to the Unification Church said Friday that it plans to send 300 tons of flour to North Korea early next week.

The Ambassadors for Peace said the flour will be sent to a children's home in a town in North Pyeongan Province near the border with China. The aid is expected to cross over the South-North border on Monday.

The organization said five of its members will accompany the food shipment north so as to monitor its distribution later in the month.

The flour will reach Kaesong via the Gyeongui train line that links Seoul with the North Korean city of Sinuiju, before its is off-loaded onto trucks.

The organization said the money for the flour was collected through a local campaign that began last year.

The shipment coincides with the 20th anniversary of Unification Church founder Moon Sun-myung's meeting with North Korea's late leader Kim Il-sung that took place on Nov. 30, 1991.
