Usually doctors are the ones that comfort patients when they must break bad news to them. However, the roles were reversed between Dr. Sebastian Schubl, a trauma surgeon at Jamaica Hospital in Queens, New York, and Aldred, a 75-year-old woman.
Schubl assured Aldred and her family that she would be just fine just hours before her surgery. But during the operation, he was shocked to find that the cancer cells had spread throughout her body. Thus, he sat down to tell her the bad news; he could do nothing more.
After seeing his miserable face when he told her the news, she lightly joked, “I know you love me, right?”
He responded, “Kind of a lot. You’re the sweetest.”
However, when she added, “First love, right?” Schubl put his head down to hide his uncontrollable tears.
Aldred reached over and soothed her doctor as he sobbed into his hands.
This tender moment was captured by NY Med, a show that follows doctors and their patients at New York- Presbyterian Hospital and Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn.
