Mountain king contenders set to race

Climbers wishing to be crowned “King of the Mountain” are invited to enter a race scaling two Korean mountain peaks.

The Mini-King of the Mountain race in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do, will see contestants race over two small peaks ― from near sea level to a top height of 430 meters.

Entrants in the April 9 contest will start at the base of Horang San and travel about 6 kilometers to Heung Guk Sa ― tackling the two peaks in their path.

Competitors must first make their way almost vertically up to 425 meters above sea level, then across a ridge, through a valley and onto a second climb, to the second peak of 430 meters and down the other side, finishing at Heung Guk temple.

All proceeds from the 2,000 won entrance fee and any additional sponsorship money raised by contestants will go to the Ngumbulu Project ― a charity supporting work in Kenya.

A trophy will be given for 1st place, and a certificate for all who enter.

Check-in for the race to be held on April 9 will start at 9 a.m. with the race beginning at 10 a.m.
