Russian TV sacks anchor for rude gesture after Obama mention

A top Russian TV network said Thursday it had sacked an award-winning news anchor who stunned viewers by inexplicably raising her middle finger after reading US President Barack Obama's name.

The bizarre episode happened during a routine afternoon news programme hosted by private REN TV channel newscaster Tatyana Limanova -- winner of Russia's prestigious TEFI television award.

The November 14 show was progressing smoothly through another set of government meetings until reaching the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum being hosted that weekend by the US leader in his native state of Hawaii.

"Dmitry Medvedev became chairman of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) organisation today," Limanova read.

"This post was previously held by US President Barack Obama," she added before quickly raising her left arm from the table and showing her middle finger to the TV camera.

The show then switched to a recording of an APEC press conference and then moved on to other news.

Rent TV has withdrawn the video from its archive but it can be viewed on RuTube at http://rutube.ru/tracks/5013048.htm.

A source at the station said Limanova was sacked on the day of the blunder.

Her dismissal was confirmed on Thursday after the incident was reported by several Russian media outlets.

The station added in a statement that the anchor was in fact gesturing to her camera crew and had no idea at the time that she was still live on air.

"Ren TV management considers this a gross violation of on-air discipline and unprofessionalism," the station said.

Ren TV is Russia's largest television network not controlled by the state. (AFP)

러시아 톱 여성 뉴스진행자가 생방송 도중 버락 오바마 미국 대통령을 겨냥해 가운뎃 손가락을 들어 보여 논란을 일으킨 끝에 해고됐다.

러시아 REN TV 채널은 24일(현지시간) 이달 초 오후 뉴스 시간에 저지른 해프닝에 대한 책임을 물어 자사 유명 앵커인 타타냐 리마노바를 해고했다고 밝혔다.

러시아와 미국에서 확산되고 있는 이 해프닝 관련 동영상에는 리마노바가 드미트리 메드베데프 러시아 대통령이 아시아•태평양경제협력체(APEC) 순회 의장직을 맡게 됐다는 뉴스를 씩씩하게 전하는 장면이 나온다.

그녀는 "그 자리는 직전에 버락 오바마가 맡고 있었다"고 말하면서 자연스럽게, 그리고 분명하게 왼손을 올리면서 카메라를 향해 공격적인 동작으로 '손가락 욕설'을 했다.

채널 측은 리마노바가 당시 카메라가 꺼진 줄 착각하고 단지 리포트가 끝났음을 보여주려 한 것이었다거나, 그녀의 집중력을 흐트러뜨리려 한 스튜디오 기술자를 겨냥했던 것이었다고 해명했다.

REN TV는 전통적으로 뉴스가 국가에 의해 통제되는 러시아에서 상대적으로 자유로운 채널로 알려졌었으나 지금은 블라디미르 푸틴 총리의 측근이 소유한 조직의 통 제를 받으면서 크렘린에 점점 맹종한다는 비판을 받아왔다.

이번 스캔들은 오바마 대통령이 미-러 관계를 재정립하려고 시도하면서 양국 간 관계가 악화하는 시점에 나온 것이다.
