Teenager pulled out of Turkish quake rubble

ERCIS, Turkey (AP) — Searchers working under floodlights early Wednesday pulled out an 18-year old university student from the ruins of an apartment building 61 hours after a devastating earthquake struck eastern Turkey.

They used tiny cameras mounted on sticks to locate Eyup Erdem and broke into applause as he emerged from the wreckage of a multistory building in the city of Ercis, hit hardest in the magnitude-7.2 quake that struck on Sunday.

The state-run Anatolia news agency said Erdem was injured and was being treated at a field hospital.

The student, who had moved to Ercis a month ago to study mechanics at a university, was the latest to be pulled out of the rubble alive as rescuers desperately worked against the clock to find survivors.

The quake has killed at least 459 people. Health Ministry official Seraceddin Com said some 40 people were pulled out alive from collapsed buildings on Tuesday.

They included a 2-week-old baby girl brought out half-naked but alive from the wreckage of an apartment building 48 hours after the quake. Her mother and grandmother were also rescued, but her father was missing.

The pockets of jubilation were however, tempered by many more discoveries of bodies by thousands of aid workers.

Desperate survivors fought over aid and blocked aid shipments. A powerful aftershock ignited widespread panic that triggered a prison riot in a nearby provincial city.

With thousands left homeless or too afraid to return to damaged houses, Turkey said it would accept international aid offers, even from Israel, with which it has had strained relations. The country said it would need prefabricated homes to house survivors during the winter. Israel offered assistance despite a rift between the two countries over last year's Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla that killed nine Turkish activists.

Some 2,000 buildings collapsed and some 1,350 people were injured. The fact that the quake hit in daytime, when many people were out of their homes, averted an even worse disaster.

Close to 500 aftershocks have rattled the area, according to Turkey's Kandilli seismology center. A strong aftershock on Tuesday sent residents rushing into the streets in panic while sparking a riot that lasted several hours by prisoners in the city of Van, 55 miles (90 kilometers) south of Ercis. The U.S. Geological Survey put that temblor at a magnitude of 5.7.

Some prisoners demanded to be let out while others set bedding on fire as the revolt spread inside the 1,000-bed prison, the Dogan news agency reported.

Gerald Rockenshaub, disaster response manager at the World Health Organization, said the first 48 to 72 hours are crucial for rescues and the chances of finding survivors decrease significantly after that. People can survive without food for a week or so, but having access to water is critical, especially for the elderly and infants, he said.

Turkey lies in one of the world's most active seismic zones and is crossed by numerous fault lines. In 1999, two earthquakes with a magnitude of more than 7 struck northwestern Turkey, killing about 18,000 people.

사흘 전 규모 7.2의 강진이 강타한 터 키 동남부에서 생후 2주일 된 여자아기가 지진으로 무너진 건물 잔해 더미에서 48시 간 만에 극적으로 구조됐다.

아기의 건강이 양호한 상태로 확인되고 아이의 엄마와 할머니도 뒤따라 함께 구 조돼 사망자 수가 432명으로 불어난 피해 현장에 큰 위안이 되고 있다.

AP 통신 등 외신에 따르면 구조요원들은 25일(현지시간) 낮 무너진 아파트 건물 잔해에서 태어난 지 14일 된 여아 아즈라 카라두만을 구해냈다. 지진 발생으로 붕괴 한 건물 잔해더미에 갇힌 지 48시간 만이다.

구조요원 중 몸집이 가장 작은 이즈미르 출신의 카디르 디렉(35) 씨가 건물 잔 해 틈을 비집고 들어가 엄마 무릎에 있던 카라두만을 안아 밖으로 나오는 데 성공했 다.

디렉 씨가 건물더미 안으로 들어가 카라두만을 데리고 나오는 장면은 현지 TV를 통해 생중계돼 기적의 드라마를 연출됐다.

디렉 씨는 "아이에게 손길이 닿았을 때 나는 이 세상에서 가장 행복한 사람이었 다"며 감격의 순간을 전했다.

구조된 카라두만은 수도 앙카라의 병원으로 옮겨진 뒤 건강에 아무런 이상이 없 는 것으로 확인됐다. 카라두만이 구조된 지 몇 시간 뒤 아이의 엄마와 할머니도 차 례로 구조됐다.

아이의 삼촌 세놀 이기트는 "기적"이라고 기뻐하며 "이틀을 기다렸다. 무너진 건물을 처음 봤을 땐 희망을 잃었다"고 회고했다.

인근 도시에 살던 카라두만의 엄마는 아이를 데리고 에르지쉬 군(郡)에 있는 친 정을 방문했다가 사고를 당했다. 이란과 국경을 접한 반 주(州)를 강타한 이번 지진 에서 에르지쉬 군은 피해가 가장 큰 지역이다.

구조요원 디렉 씨는 "나중에 아이를 엄마에게 데려가자 그녀가 중간 이름을 지 어달라고 해 예언자 모하메드의 아내와 빛의 이름을 합성한 아이세눌이라는 이름을 선택했다"고 말했다.

또 카라두만이 구조된 데 이어 반 시(市)에서는 지진 발생 54시간 만에 10세의 세르하트 굴 군이 7층짜리 아파트 건물 잔해에서 극적으로 구조되는 등 많지는 않지 만 기적 같은 구조가 잇따랐다.

구조요원들은 지진이 발생한 지 56~72시간이 지나면 생존자가 버티기 어렵다고 보고 생존자 구조작업에 박차를 가하고 있다.

그러나 기적 같은 생존자 구조 소식에도 불구하고 이번 지진에 따른 사망자 수 는 계속 늘어나고 있다.

총리실은 이번 지진으로 숨진 사람이 432명으로 늘었으며 부상자는 1천352명으 로 집계됐다고 이날 오후 밝혔다. 이번 지진으로 건물 2천200여동이 파괴됐다. 현지 언론매체들은 2만여명의 이재민이 발생한 것으로 보도했다
