Looters attack S. Korea embassy in Libya: official

South Korea‘s embassy in the Libyan capital Tripoli has been attacked by looters amid the chaos arising from battles to topple leader Moamer Kadhafi, a Seoul official said Monday.

Some 10 armed attackers stormed the mission on Sunday afternoon and tried to steal furniture and electronics, said foreign ministry spokesman Shin Maeng-Ho.

They fled empty-handed when rebel forces contacted by embassy staff arrived on the scene, he said, adding no one among a handful of Libyan and Bangladeshi workers at the embassy was hurt.

“We believe they were just civilian looters claiming to be rebel forces, considering they ran away when rebel police came,” Shin told AFP.

Most of the embassy officials have been temporarily moved to Tunisia since late May amid escalating violence and NATO air strikes.

Fighting has largely ended in the capital, with the longtime leader in hiding, and rebels are trying to restart services.

South Korea has officially recognised Libya’s rebel-led council as the legitimate government and pledged to offer humanitarian aid to the National Transitional Council. (AFP)

리비아 주재 한국대사관 무장강도에 침입당해

리비아 주재 한국대사관저에 이어 대사관도 무장 폭도들에 의해 침입당한 것으로 밝혀졌다.

29일 외교통상부 당국자들에 따르면 지난 28일(현지시각) 오전 5시30분께 소총으로 무장한 괴한 10여 명이 트리폴리 시내 대사관에 난입해 TV 등 각종 집기를 탈 취하려고 시도했다.

이에 대사관을 지키던 현지 고용원들이 경찰에 신고하자 당황한 이들은 집기를 버리고 도주한 것으로 알려졌다.

외교부 당국자는 “트리폴리 시내 치안이 불안정한 상황에서 일반 폭도들에 의해 자행된 사건으로 보인다”면서 “조직화한 무장세력으로 보기는 힘들다”고 말했다.

이 당국자는 “현재 트리폴리 시내는 큰 전투가 완료되면서 치안상황이 안정화되 고 있는 단계”라면서 “다만 간헐적 교전이 지속되고 있고 무기들이 일반 시민에게 다량 배포된 상황이어서 신변안전에 계속 각별한 주의를 기울여야 할 상황”이라고 전했다.

현재 튀니지 제르바에 머물고 있는 주리비아 대사관 측은 유사 사건 재발 가능성에 대비해 트리폴리 치안 당국에 대사관 안전보호를 강화해줄 것을 요청했다.

이에 앞서 지난 23일(현지시각) 저녁 주 리비아 한국대사관저에 무장세력 30여 명이 침입해 각종 집기를 약탈해갔다. (연합뉴스)
