'Thor: Ragnarok' tops box office on first weekend

"Thor: Ragnarok" had an outstanding opening weekend at the South Korean box office, topping the chart in terms of the number of tickets sold, data showed Monday.

According to real-time box office figures from the Korean Film Council, the Disney-Marvel superhero film sold 1.58 million tickets for 1,639 screens around the country over the Oct. 27-29 weekend.

The film, starring such Hollywood A-listers as Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett and Idris Elba, broke the 2 million attendance mark Sunday, the fifth day of its run.

The Korean film "The Outlaws" was knocked down to second place, after having taken the throne for two weekends straight.

The crime-action flick starring Ma Dong-seok and Yoon Kye-sang added 476,051 to its cumulative audience figure of 5.8 million.

Coming in third was a Japanese romance film that sold 135,299 tickets, following its local premiere at the 22nd Busan International Film Festival early this month.

The romance, titled "Let Me Eat Your Pancreas," is about a high school loner who finds a diary by a popular classmate that reveals she is suffering from a pancreatic disease, and he gradually comes out of his shell as he spends time with her.

The Hollywood disaster flick "Geostorm" was a close fourth, selling 112,934 tickets. It was followed by "Man of Will," a local biopic on the early life of prominent independence activist and politician Kim Koo. The film, which stars Cho Jin-woong and Song Seung-heon, attracted 27,527 viewers on its second weekend. (Yonhap)
