Warrant dismissed on prosecutor in sexual case

The Seoul Central District Court on Monday dismissed the application for the warrant to detain the public prosecutor accused of having sexual relations with a female suspect in return for favorable treatment.

The junior prosecutor identified by his surname Jeon has been charged with bribery.

“It is difficult to acknowledge the need to keep the suspect under detention as there is significant doubt about the crime,” the judge said when dismissing the warrant.

“The possibility of destruction of evidence is low as the situation has been recorded by the victim, and there is little concern that the suspect will flee.”

The junior prosecutor has been accused of having engaged in sexual acts with the victim in his office on Nov. 10 during questioning, and again at a motel in Seoul on Nov. 12.

The victim was being investigated by Jeon for allegedly stealing items worth 4.5 million won ($4,100) from a Seoul supermarket over 16 occasions.

The 42-year old victim has since submitted six recordings describing the situation to the audit division of the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office.
