Give extra cash for Korean orphans

A group helping young adult Korean orphans is seeking donations on GlobalGiving Bonus day, which runs until 2 p.m. Thursday.

Any cash given to Korean Kids and Orphanage Outreach Mission between 2 p.m. Wednesday and 1 p.m. Thursday will be upped by 30 percent on the GlobalGiving site.

The fund-raising website www.globalgiving.org is adding 30 percent to donations of up to $1,000 per individual donor or project, including KKOOM’s campaign to support young adult Korean orphans.

KKOOM’s project hosted on the site is raising money to help with job search, relocation and post-high school education expenses for young adults leaving orphanages here. Many would otherwise be left destitute upon leaving orphanages with no savings or access to support.

The campaign has already raised more than $4,000 toward its $10,000 goal to give support grants on a case-by-case basis.

One 23-year-old orphan was recently helped with a $180 gift to allow him to move three hours away from the orphanage where he was raised to start a new job as a nurse.

KKOOM volunteers stay in touch with the young adults after grants have been given, providing mentoring and emotional support.
