STOCKHOLM (AFP) - A Swedish prosecutor said Saturday he would investigate rumours that the name of poet Tomas Transtroemer was leaked before he was awarded the Nobel Literature Prize.
Chief anti-corruption prosecutor Alf Johansson said he would be looking at why betting odds on Transtromer winning the prize went from 13-1 to less than
2-1 in the hours before the award was announced on Thursday.
Sofia Hjaertberg of the Swedish division of bookmakers Ladbrokes said such a swift change in the odds was unprecedented.
Stressing that no formal inquiry had been opened, Johansson told AFP, "We just want to inform ourselves about the situation."
He said he would be looking at the operation of betting and data from the Swedish Academy which awards the prize.
Academy member Per Waestberg told Sweden's TT news agency that he did not believe in a leak.
The daily Dagens Nyheter recalled that rumours of a leak had arisen in 2008, when Ladbrokes stopped taking bets on winner Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio.

부패 사건을 담당하는 알프 요한슨 검사는 트란스트뢰메르의 수상 가능성을 점치는 배당률이 13대1에서 발표 몇 시간 전에 2대1이 못 미치는 수준까지 올라간 것 에 대해 조사할 것이라고 말했다.
도박업체인 래드브로크의 스웨덴 지사 관계자는 이런 급격한 배당률 변화가 유 례없는 일이라고 설명했다.
요한슨 검사는 도박업체의 운영과 노벨상을 주관하는 스웨덴 한림원의 자료를 조사할 것이라고 했다.
그러나 한림원 회원인 페르 바에스트베르그는 스웨덴의 TT뉴스통신과의 회견에 서 사전에 수상자 정보가 유출됐다고는 생각하지 않는다고 말했다.
현지 일간 다겐스 뉘헤테르는 2008년 래드브로크가 나중에 수상자로 발표된 프랑스 작가 르 클레지오에 대한 베팅을 받는 것을 중단했을 때도 수상자 정보가 사전 에 유출됐다는 루머가 유포됐다는 사실을 지적했다.
