EU delegation to visit N.K. next month

An EU delegation will visit North Korea next month, a U.S.-funded radio station reported Tuesday, confirming the annual visit which had been cancelled last year after the North’s provocations on Seoul.

The European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with the Korean Peninsula, led by Christian Ehler, is scheduled to visit the communist state on Oct. 19 for parliamentarian-level talks, Radio Free Asia reported, quoting an EU official.

The composition of the delegation is yet to be fixed, Marcel Roijen told RFA, adding it will be the first visit to Pyongyang by the incumbent European Union administration, which was formed at the end of 2009.

The EU delegation has visited the two Koreas each year to discuss issues regarding the Korean Peninsula. But it skipped the visit to Pyongyang last year after the communist state torpedoed a South Korean warship, killing 46 young sailors.

Issues such as the resumption of the stalled regional nuclear disarmament talks, human rights conditions in North Korea and humanitarian aid will be discussed during the delegation’s stay in the North, RFA said.
