Korea aims to attract more foreign scientists

The government announced Tuesday that it will open a one-stop information center to help foreign researchers settle here.

The plan is part of efforts to enhance the country’s basic science research by attracting more highly qualified scientists from abroad, according to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

The one-stop center will be established at the Institute for Basic Science in Daejeon. At the center, specially designated personnel will provide all necessary assistance, from housing to national, to foreign researchers who wish to work here. It will also provide translation services, officials said.

The IBS was established in 2011 as a part of the government’s 5.2 trillion won science belt project.

The government is planning to complete the International Science and Business Belt by 2017 in a 3.6 square kilometer area of Daejeon.

To make the mega project more prosperous, the government is also planning to bring in some 500 foreign experts by the end of 2017, the ministry said.

“So far the IBS has hired 11 foreign experts, but the number will rise quickly as we’re planning to provide all necessary support to attract them,” an official from the ministry said.
