Park sets sights on 100m finals

The management company for Korean swimmer Park Tae-hwan said Wednesday it will be satisfied with a finals place in the men’s 100-meter freestyle at next month’s world championships.

Park will add the event to his usual 200m and 400m freestyle events at the championships in Shanghai.

“Park has been training continuously to increase his speed and he recently suggested he should add the 100-meter freestyle to his repertoire,” manager Kwon Se-jung told AFP.

“His coach Michael Bohl granted his wish to do so, saying his presence at major events would help bolster his performance,” Kwon said.

“We would be satisfied if he makes it to the finals at the 100-meter freestyle at the world championships.”

Kwon said Park was buoyed by his recent run in the shorter event. At the Santa Clara International Grand Prix in California last weekend, Park edged American star Michael Phelps to take the 100m crown in 48.92 seconds.
