Daughter follows father’s footsteps, joins police force

A girl who has dreamed of being a police officer like her father since she was young is now assigned to work at the police station alongside her father.

Shim Soon-tae, 24, has been appointed as police constable and assigned to work at the regional office in Eumseong County in North Chungcheong Province, since June 1.

Her father Shim Seong-bo, 52, has been praised for his police work in the region, where he is a lieutenant. He has gained the nickname of “the fixer” for dealing with regional conflicts in a friendly manner, including the strike by civil servants last year. His work has been appreciated by the government, which honored him with a prize. Shim led efforts to deal with the nation’s serious outbreak of the foot and mouth disease outbreak in his region earlier this year.
His daughter applied for police recruitment to become a police officer this year and was accepted. It’s her second time applying for the job as she was not accepted last year.

Majoring in architecture at the South Chungcheong University, Shim hopes to become an investigator who specializes in construction and buildings.
