Student gets 2 years for role in looting

A millionaire's daughter was sentenced to two years imprisonment Friday for chauffeuring looters around London during last summer's riots.

Laura Johnson, 20, a student at Exeter University, was convicted of burglary and handling stolen goods, The Daily Telegraph reported. She had thousands of dollars in electronic items in her car when she was arrested Aug. 9, 2011.

Johnson, whose parents run a marketing business, grew up in an affluent area in Kent and was a top student in high school. She began having problems and met Emmanuel Okubote, 20, a convicted cocaine dealer, while she was receiving outpatient mental health treatment.

When she was questioned, Johnson told police she feared Okubote and others who were in her car that night. Prosecutors showed the jury photos in which she looked carefree as she drove them around.

The riots began with a protest in North London over a police killing, They spread to other neighborhoods and to other cities. (UPI)
