S. Korean quarantine officials find dead duck infected with bird flu

South Korea has found one dead duck infected with the virulent strain of bird flu in the southeastern part of the country, the provincial government said Saturday.

The South Gyeongsang provincial government said one of five dead ducks found in the city of Sacheon was infected with the deadly strain of Avian influenza.

The provincial government said it designated a 10-kilometer region around the outbreak location as supervision areas and banned the movement of livestock and people in addition to conducting an emergency disinfection of the area.

South Korea on Friday confirmed its first bird flu outbreak in two years at two poultry farms in the central and southwestern part of the country.

Avian influenza is an airborne disease that can be transmitted to humans, although no human cases have ever been reported in South Korea.

The series of cases of Avian influenza infection add to concerns in the country, which is already struggling to contain the spread of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) cases across the country. (Yonhap News)
