MLS stars top Chelsea

CHESTER, Pennyslvania (AP) ― Eddie Johnson scored in the 91st minute to give the Major League Soccer All-Stars a 3-2 victory over Chelsea on Wednesday night.

Chris Wondolowski and Chris Pontius also scored goals for the MLS All-Stars at PPL Park, the home of the Philadelphia Union.

Frank Lampard and John Terry scored for Chelsea, the touring English Premier League team, selected to play in the All-Star game.

Los Angeles Galaxy star David Beckham received the loudest pregame ovation only hours after arriving from London. Beckham, his pink shoes as bright as the lights that lit up the field, was set to head back to London immediately after the game because he has a role in the opening ceremony at the Olympics.

Beckham thrilled the fans when he set up for a free kick, though the ball was headed out.

Beckham failed to score on his subsequent corner kick.

For the rest of the All-Stars who aren’t London bound, playing just outside Philadelphia was the next best thing. Plus, there was a taste of London outside of PPL Park where the globally popular Blues had a pair of championship trophies stationed in a tent and a line of fans waiting to pose next to them for some pictures.

Roma beats Liverpool

BOSTON (AP) ― Michael Bradley and Alessandro Florenzi scored second-half goals, lifting Italy’s Roma to a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in an exhibition game at Fenway Park on Wednesday night.

Bradley sent a right-footed kick by keeper Brad Jones that caromed into the goal off the left post in the 63rd minute, drawing chants of “USA! USA!” from the crowd of 37,169. He’s the son of former U.S. coach Bob Bradley.

Florenzi, who entered as a substitute 2 minutes earlier, scored off a rebound from directly in front.

Messi costs Barca

BARCELONA (AP) ― Lionel Messi’s absence from Barcelona’s exhibition at Hamburg because of a right leg injury cost the club more than just a game from the world‘s best player.

Barcelona confirmed to the Associated Press on Wednesday that the Argentine forward’s failure to play in Germany on Tuesday will cost the club 30 percent of its fee for the game, a loss of about $436,000.

Barcelona beat Hamburg 2-1 on goals by Dani Alves and Gerard Deulofeu. The team was also without its Spanish national team players.
