Korean manufacturing sector shrinks in 2012: BOK

The portion of the manufacturing sector in South Korea’s economy slimmed down in 2012 from the previous year as demand for technology products slowed, a report showed Thursday.

Output by the manufacturing sector accounted for 50.4 percent of the total economy in 2012, slipping from 51 percent in the previous year, according to the report by the Bank of Korea.

The report showed shipments of mobile phones and liquid crystal displays marked double-digit falls amid a prolonged economic slump in eurozone countries in 2012.

As the portion of the manufacturing sector fell, that of the service sector rose to 39.4 percent from 38.9 percent.

The report said the portion of exports increased to 38.3 percent of final demand from 37.8 percent in the previous year.

The portion of consumption also increased to 42.2 percent from 41.7 percent, while that of investment fell to 19.5 percent from 20.5 percent, according to the report. (Yonhap)
