Man United salvage draw with Basel

There was turmoil for both Manchester clubs in the Champions League on Tuesday night, with United wasting a two-goal lead in a 3-3 draw with Basel and Carlos Tevez refusing to play for City in its 2-0 defeat at Bayern Munich.

Ahead 2-0 after Danny Welbeck scored twice in a two-minute span in the first half at Old Trafford, United allowed goals by Fabian Frei in the 58th minute and Alexander Frei in the 60th, and then a penalty kick by Alexander Frei in the 76th after Antonio Valencia fouled Marco Streller.

United salvaged its second straight tie in Group C when Ashley Young scored on a header in the 90th minute.

In Munich, Mario Gomez scored in the 38th and 45th minutes, both times knocking in rebounds after saves from goalkeeper Joe Hart. City manager Roberto Mancini wanted to bring in Tevez as a substitute in the second half, but the Argentine forward ― who asked to leave last summer ― refused to enter.

“If I have my way he will be out of the club,” Mancini said. “I decide this, not Carlos. If one player has a lot of (to) money play for Manchester City in the Champions League and he has this behavior, for me he can’t play never.”

Asked about Mancini’s threat not to play him again, Tevez told Sky Sports through a translator: “That’s a decision for him to make. ... I’ve been a professional during all my time here. Last season I was the best scorer. I have said I wanted to leave for family reasons, but I keep trying to do my best.”

Real Madrid defeated visiting Ajax 3-0 on goals by Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema in a Group D meeting of teams with 13 European Cup titles.

Inter Milan earned its first points in Group B after Mauro Zarate scored a tiebreaking goal for a 3-2 win at CSKA Moscow.(AP)
