'Kingsman' tops 5 mln in attendance

"Kingsman: The Secret Service" by director Matthew Vaughn has exceeded the 5 million mark in audience numbers here, a market tracker said Friday.

The action thriller drew 5,016,397 viewers in local theaters as of Thursday, 36 days after it was released on Feb. 11, the Korean Film Council said.

The film currently tops the local box office ranking in its sixth week of playing despite the limitation that it is an adult-only, non-Korean film.

Earlier this week, it became the fifth most-viewed adult-only film ever in South Korea, beating "New World" (2012) and "Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time" (2012), both Korean films that attracted 4.68 million and 4.72 million respectively. Industry experts say "Kingsman" is expected to catch up with "The Chaser" (2008) which is currently at No. 4, this weekend. The homegrown film was viewed by 5.07 million.

"Kingsman" depicts the story of spy organization which recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into its ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius. (Yonhap)
