Hollywood actor Jack Black, best known for his role as Dewey Finn in the blockbuster hit “School of Rock,” will be in Seoul this winter for a concert with his notoriously humorous band, Tenacious D.
Tenacious D, with Black on lead vocals and guitar and his long-time friend Kyle Gass on guitar, is slated to perform two live shows at Seoul Olympic Park’s Olympic Hall on Dec. 5 and 6. It will be the American rock duo’s first performance in Korea.
The two formed the band in Los Angeles in 1994, but the comedic rockers but didn’t really start gaining mass attention until they starred in their own television series, also titled “Tenacious D,” in the late ’90s.
The band’s signature sound features Black’s thespian-like vocals and, of course, the light yet quick-witted crude humor that the world has come to expect from the rocker-comedian.
In 2001, the duo released its eponymous debut album, featuring one of the duo’s most successful hits to date, “Tribute.” Five years later, the duo released its second studio album “The Pick of Destiny” as a soundtrack to its Hollywood musical comedy film, “Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny.”
Both the film and the soundtrack were written and produced by the band. While Black and Gass also starred the in the movie as Tenacious D, the plot is less grounded in reality, revolving around the rockers trying to retrieve Satan’s guitar pick.
Although the film was a flop, the soundtrack debuted at the No. 8 spot on the U.S. Billboard 200 albums chart.
In 2012, the duo released its most recent album, “Rize of the Fenix,” which received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Comedy Album in 2013. The album topped Billboard’s Comedy Albums chart and ranked No. 4 in the overall Billboard 200 albums chart.
Tickets for the Seoul concerts will go on sale Tuesday with prices ranging from 99,000 won to 121,000 won. For more information, visit interpark.com.
