Economic slump saps whisky sales in Korea

Sales of whisky products in South Korea fell in the first 10 months of the year mainly due to a protracted economic slump, industry data showed Monday.

According to the data, whisky product sales in the January to October period fell 12.4 percent to 1.5 million boxes, compared with the 1.7 million boxes a year ago. A box contains 18 0.5-liter bottles.

Diageo Korea Co., the South Korean unit of the British liquor company, sold 578,662 boxes in the period, down 11.8 percent from a year ago, taking the top spot in the local whisky market.

Sales of the company’s flagship brand Windsor reached 504,814 boxes in the period, down 14.7 percent from a year ago.

The company was followed by Pernod Ricard Korea, the local unit of France’s Pernod Ricard Group, known for its Chivas Regal and Ballantine’s brands.

Pernod Ricard Korea’s whisky sales tumbled 19.3 percent on-year to 452,763 boxes in the first 10 months of the year.

Coming in third, South Korea’s Lotte Chilsung Beverage Co., with its Scotch Blue brand, suffered a 16.2 percent on-year drop to 248,79 boxes in the above-cited period. (Yonhap News)
