Killer whale drags trainer under water for 15 minutes

Peters, who remains eerily calm, finally manages to free himself, only to have Kasatka charge him over the barrier net.

After he resurfaced, the whale grabbed him again and violently shook him back and forth with her powerful neck muscles.

At the time, SeaWorld tried to downplay the incident.

"There are times like this. They are killer whales. She did choose to demonstrate her feelings in a way that was unfortunate," Mike Scarpuzzi, head trainer at SeaWorld, was quoted as saying.

Trainers were eventually able to separate the two with the help of a net, but the whale tried to rip Peters away from safety.

‘살인고래’에 끌려 들어간 악몽의 15분

미국 씨월드에서 살인 고래가 조련사를 물속으로 무려 15분간이나 끌고 들어갔었던 영상이 공개되어 충격을 주고 있다.

유튜브에 공개된 이 영상은 2006년에 제작된 것으로 미국 노동부가 씨월드를 상대로 조련사들을 위험한 고래에 노출시켰다며 소송을 걸어 현재 소송이 진행되고 있는 상황에서 공개된 것이다.

영상에 따르면 ‘카사카’라는 이름의 이 고래는 샌디에이고 조련사 켄 피터스의 발목을 입으로 문 채 장시간 동안 물 속으로 잠수한다.

조련사는 침착하게 빠져 나와 수면 위로 올라오지만 고래는 다시 그를 잡아 무시무시한 목 근육을 이용해 심하게 그를 앞 뒤로 흔든다.

이 사건이 일어났을 당시 씨월드는 사건을 축소하려 했다.

그 당시 수석 조련사였던 마이크 스카푸치는 이런 일은 흔히 있는 일이라며 고래가 안타깝게도 그런 방식으로 자신의 감정을 표현한 것 뿐이라 일축했다.

결국 피터스 조련사는 주위의 도움으로 던져진 그물에 의해 빠져나올 수 있었다.
