Korean rhythmic gymnast to perform with Rio Olympics champion in local show

Son Yeon-jae will perform with the world's top rhythmic gymnasts, including the Rio Olympics gold medalist, at a local rhythmic gymnastics gala show next week, her agency said Tuesday.

Galaxia SM said Son and Margarita Mamun, the Russian who won the individual all-around title at the Rio Games, will perform at an event named "Rhythmic All Stars 2016." It will be staged at Goyang Gymnasium in Goyang, north of Seoul, on Sept. 16 and 17.

The agency said world No. 3 Alexandra Soldatova of Russia will also showcase her program. Belarusian gymnasts Melitina Staniouta and Katsiaryna Halkina as well as France's Kseniya Moustafaeva will be present at the event, Galaxia SM said.

At the Rio Games, Son finished fourth in the individual all-around final with a total of 72.898 points from her hoop, clubs, ribbon and ball programs. Staniouta was fifth at 71.133, while Halkina was sixth at 70.932. Moustafaeva finished in 10th.

Soldatova didn't compete at the Rio Games because a country can field a maximum of two gymnasts in the all-around. Russia was represented by Mamun and Yana Kudryavtseva, who won the silver medal.

Galaxia SM said the Italian rhythmic gymnastics team, which finished fourth in the group all-around final at the Rio Games, will be at Goyang. (Yonhap)
