Olympic weightlifting champ ordered to pay fines for assault charges

Former Olympic weightlifting champion Sa Jae-hyouk was ordered to pay fines on Thursday for assaulting a fellow weightlifter last year.

The Chuncheon District Court ordered the 31-year-old to pay a fine of 10 million won ($8,600) for punching Hwang Woo-man in the face at a local pub in December. Hwang, who is 10 years Sa's junior, was hospitalized with serious facial injuries.

The court said it took into consideration that Sa was deprived of his qualification as an athlete following the decision made by the sport's national federation.

In January, the Olympic champion who won gold at the 2008 Beijing Games in the men's 77kg class, received a 10-year suspension from the Korea Weightlifting Federation for the scandal, effectively ending his career. (Yonhap)
