Psy denies plagiarism accusation

Singer Psy dismissed plagiarism accusation of his global hit “Gangnam Style.”

According to his agency YG Entertainment, a Korean music producer has filed a suit against Psy’s “Gangnam Style,” seeking 100 million won in compensation for alleged plagiarism, but YG said it wasn’t “even worth” dealing with the claim.

“People could easily tell that ‘Gangnam Style’ wasn’t plagiarized if they listen to the song. There have been lots of claims like this after the song became a global hit. It seems like people are trying to attract attention by claiming plagiarism,” said YG, one of the biggest entertainment agencies in Korea.

The comic blockbuster song “Gangnam Style” was co-produced by Psy and music producer Yoo Keon-hyung, who is also working on the singer’s new song, which is set to be released next month.

The new song will first be revealed to Korean fans on April 12, one day before the global release, via Psy’s YouTube-broadcast concert at Seoul World Cup Stadium.

월드스타 싸이가 자신의 글로벌 메가 히트곡 ‘강남스타일’로 표절 소송에 휘말린 사실이 뒤늦게 알려진 가운데 싸이 측은 “일고의 대응 가치도 없다”란 입장을 밝혔다.

싸이의 소속사 YG엔터테인먼트 관계자는 14일 오전 지난해 10월 작곡가 이모씨가 ‘강남스타일’이 자신의 노래를 표절했다며 1억원의 손해배상소송을 제기한 것에 대해 “대응할 가치도 없는 일이다”고 일축했다.

이 관계자는 “노래를 들어보면 누구라도 표절이 아니란 것을 안다. 해당 건에 대해서는 이미 인지하고 있었고 소송 건은 이번이 처음이지만 이 외에도 ‘강남스타일’의 흥행 이후 표절을 주장하는 이들이 여럿 있었다. 확인 결과 전부 표절과 관련이 없었으며 그저 싸이의 인기를 이용해 이슈화하려는 소행으로 밖에 보이지 않아 더 대응할 필요도 못 느꼈다”고 설명했다.

싸이의 ‘강남스타일’은 그의 음악적 파트너인 유건형과 공동 작곡한 곡이다. 싸이는 오는 4월 공개할 신곡 역시 유건형과 함께 작업 중에 있다.

싸이는 내 달 13일 서울 상암동 월드컵 경기장에서 ‘강남스타일’ 신드롬 이후 첫 단독 유료공연을 개최한다. 또 새 싱글의 전세계 동시 발매를 하루 앞둔 12일에는 한국 팬들에게만 신곡을 처음 공개할 예정이다. (코리아헤럴드)
