Hyundai Motor’s contract workers plan one-day strike

A group of non-regular employees at Hyundai Motor’s factories nationwide said they will go on partial strike on Thursday, demanding job security.

Depending on coming situations involving concessions from management, their protest could develop into a full-fledged walkout, according to a statement from the non-regular workers’ union.

While participants are likely to include a large portion of 13,000 contract workers at the carmaker’s plants in Ulsan, Asan and Jeonju, they plan to call on the management to convert their employment into regular status.

In a statement, they clarified that the union would raise the level of protest if management continues to take an insincere stance toward talks with the non-regular workers, though Thursday’s strike is scheduled to be a partial one ― for about four hours.

“Despite a series of negotiations with us since May, the management is merely seeking to evade its obligation to transfer some contract jobs to regular ones under relevant laws,” they said.
