LIG Insurance Co., a major local non-life insurance company, has donated funds it collected through ticket sales for a volleyball match to those affected by the leaked hydrofluoric acid incident in Gumi in October.
LIG said the volleyball game was between Samsung Fire and Marine Insurance and NH Nonghyup and held at the Park Chung-hee Gymnasium in Gumi on Tuesday. The donation amount was not disclosed.
Company officials said it organized the charity event in the hope of relieving the pains that people suffered in the incident.
In addition to the donation, the insurer distributed free tickets for the game to multicultural families and families with three or more children.
Last month, toxic vapor spread in an area in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, after an explosion in a local chemical plant. The leak affected villagers and damaged crops and livestock, leading the central government to designate the area a special disaster zone.
